Buy an HDTV for the Super Bowl?


Looks like we buy more than just chips, dip, chicken wings, and beer for the Super Bowl. Much more. The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) just reported that close to one-fourth of all HD television buyers, buy there set for the express purpose of watching the Super Bowl in HD. “No other sporting event comes close to prompting that many purchases of HDTVs,” according to a CEA press release. Fully 79% of U.S. adults surveyed said they were football fans. That’s higher than for any other sport, including baseball (53%), basketball (51%), racing (28%), and hockey (27%).

HD video is no longer just about television either. Super Bowl fans will use both conventional TV sets and Internet-connected devices to watch this year’s NFL championship game.

Over half of the people watching the Super Bowl online, will do so over an HD quality Internet stream. The Internet now plays a very active role in the Super Bowl experience, with ten percent of online adults planing to follow the game through social media posts; 8% will watch game news and statistics online; 7% will watch online clips or video; and 7% will watch the game live online.

“Sports events, namely the Super Bowl, continue to drive significant TV sales every year,” said Kevin Tillmann, senior research analyst, CEA. “In fact, the impact of these sports events on consumer electronic sales is even higher when factoring in TV accessories and premium broadcast services. One quarter of online U.S adults that subscribe to cable, satellite or fiber-to-home television service currently pay extra to subscribe to a premium sports package.”

Looking forward to the possibility of a 3D-viewing future, 30% of survey respondents said they are interested in watching sports events, matches or games in 3D at home. Sales of 3D-capable TV sets will grow 39% to more than 5.7 million units in 2013, CEA forecasts in its upcoming U.S. Consumer Electronics Sales and Forecast 2008-2013, which was released this month.

Internet-connected TVs, or smart TVs,  will also show strong growth this year, CEA forecasts, with unit sales reaching 12.3 million, up from 9.2 million in 2012.
