No More Passwords?

Your voice may be the only password you’ll ever need — at least that’s the way voice recognition/biometric systems provider Nuance Enterprises would like to see things turn out.

Aiming to simplify the customer authentication experience and address dissatisfaction with “PINs, passwords, and security questions,” Nuance Communications recently announced the launch of its next-generation voice biometrics platform.

Big business is increasingly turning to voice recognition platforms as a secure, more natural means of authentication, or passwords. Rather than having to type in a password or PIN, you could simply say your name into a microphone, and the website you are trying to access would recognize your voice and provide you access.

Data from Opus Research shows that the market for voice biometric solutions for authentication of customers surged 74.2% from 2011 to 2012 and is expected to grow at a constant annual growth rate (CAGR) of 35% over the next five years.

“Voice biometrics-based solutions have become an important part of the multi-factor authentication and fraud prevention plans for banks, telecommunications carriers and government agencies around the world,” Opus Research senior analyst Dan Miller commented in a press release. “We expect to see sustained, impressive growth in deployments as solutions move beyond the contact center to mobile devices and home electronics.”

Moreover, according to recent surveys, 85% of people are dissatisfied with current password methods, Nuance points out. Many of us simply forget our passwords and PINs and have to reset them regularly. That creates a big burden on companies and creates more security risks for individuals.

According to Nuance, its latest voice biometrics platform “enables more secure, effortless authentication in customer service environments through natural voice patterns, and delivers market-leading accuracy, superior detection of fraudsters, and simplified deployment and management of voice biometrics for use in consumer and enterprise settings.”
